Full-Theraputic Disclosure

A Formal Therapeutic Disclosure (FTD) is a clinical procedure conducted by trained therapists in a controlled setting. It aims to rebuild trust in relationships damaged by compulsive sexual behavior (formerly known as sexual addiction). While challenging, it offers significant recovery benefits for both partners and the marriage. Unlike a limited disclosure, which may involve a brief confession, an FTD is a structured process that provides a full sexual history, giving the betrayed partner essential information often withheld.

FTD lays the groundwork for repairing the relationship and restoring trust. It helps those struggling with compulsive sexual behavior reclaim their integrity. A study showed that 96% of individuals with such behavior felt FTD was an effective treatment, helping dismantle the dysfunctional belief that “no one would love me as I am” (Carnes, 1983). Healing this belief is a key treatment goal. After an FTD, many report freedom and peace from the burden of secrets.

FTD also upholds ethical principles, including the right to relationship choice and freedom from exploitation. Informed consent ensures that each person has access to all information affecting their well-being, allowing them to make an informed choice about whether to stay in the relationship.

Too often, when a partner discovers secret behaviors in a relationship, they receive a ‘staggered' disclosure. A ‘staggard disclosure’ refers to the gradual release of information, often over an extended time, after a betrayal or traumatic event. These ‘drips’ of information can retraumatize partners and prevent the full truth from coming forward. The full disclosure process allows a more thorough and gentle path toward getting needed information without repeated traumas.
